Mobile Marine Florida offers Tech Tips as our trusted source of technical information, based on our daily experiences out in the field maintaining, servicing, and repairing customer's boats, inboards, outboards, stern drives, boat lifts, and personal water craft.DID YOU KNOW?Your engine is cooled by a rubber water impeller which is lubricated by the water it pumps. Because the pump impellers are made of rubber and pressed into a metal housing, running your engine without a water source can cause your pump to fail prematurely. This will lead to engine overheating and possible engine failure. Water impellers are a high maintenance item that should be replaced annually or bi-annually depending on each engine manufacturer's recommendations. Have you inspected, or replaced your water impeller lately?LANYARD SWITCH?Most boats are equipped with a safety lanyard switch that connects with the captain. In case the driver is thrown, or falls away from the helm, the engine will shut off if the lanyard becomes detached. While this is an awesome safety feature; it can create a problem simply because most times people don't usually wear the lanyard clip, and are totally unaware it even exists. We receive a few calls each year for an engine that won't start, and in most cases we find that the clip has been misplaced. Please check your safety lanyard switch if your engine doesn’t want to start on that sunny day you waited so long for....

Tech Tips - Disadvantages of ethanol Disadvantages of Ethanol (E-10) in fuelA recently introduced gasoline additive has caused problems in engines and fuel systems of some boats, and experts have come to agree on a set of common sense solutions, which we’ll describe below. Many states have mandated replacement of the gasoline additive MTBE with ethanol (denatured grain alcohol). This change over was part of the 2005 Energy Bill, which also eliminated the requirement for oxygenated gas, the main reason MTBE, a suspected carcinogen and groundwater pollutant, was added in the first place. The bill also required ethanol, made from Midwestern corn, to be gradually added to the nation’s supply of gasoline. It removed protection for fuel suppliers from MTBE-related lawsuits, a big reason why ethanol has rapidly phased in. Most marinas are required to post the ethanol content in their fuel.This blend of gasoline with ethanol added, called E-10, contains 10% ethanol and 90% gas. The recommendations in this Tech Tip are based on use of E-10, the most commonly available “ethanol” fuel. A few states are also offering E-85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline, mostly available in Minnesota and Illinois), and some domestic cars and SUVs are designated as Flexible Fuel Vehicles, which can safely fill up with E-85. At this time, unless specifically stated by the engine/vessel systems manufacturers, E-85 is not recommended for use in marine power systems. For example, Mercury approves and warranties the use of E-10 fuels, but does not approve or warranty the use of E-85. E-10 works great in most cars, which tend to be newer than the majority of pleasure boats and get used far more regularly and more often. Boat owners and mechanics have reported problems connected with the changeover to E-10. Some of the challenges you may need to consider.....Ethanol acts as a detergent, loosening rust, debris and other gunk inside your tank and fuel lines. This crud clogs fuel filters, restricting fuel flow and leading to stalling and hard starting.Ethanol’s corrosive solvent-like characteristics also remove resins and plasticizers from some plastic and rubber materials. Most significantly, it damages the resins in fiberglass fuel tanks (used in many Bertram, Chris Craft and Hatteras boats in the 1960s and 1970s). Tanks slowly soften and begin leaking (with the associated potential for explosion from fuel in the bilge). Black sludge is created that builds up on intake valves, causing them to stick, and on fuel injectors, clogging orifices, with the potential for major engine damage, like bent pushrods. Some resins, notably vinylester, are impervious to ethanol. Most common types of epoxy and polyester resin are not ethanol-resistant.Ethanol is hygroscopic–it absorbs water, and will mix more easily with water than with gasoline. Up to 10% of your fuel could become a water-ethanol mix, and the liquid may undergo “phase separation”, forming a top layer of pure low–octane gas and a bottom layer of water-saturated ethanol. Since the fuel pickup is located at the tank bottom, water contaminated fuel can cause your engine to run badly, or not run at all. This low-octane fuel causes problems with performance in four stroke engines, and can cause damage in two stroke outboards from lean fuel and lack of the in-fuel lubricating oil (due to the presence of the water).Ethanol has a short six-week shelf life, and the octane begins to decrease after that time period. A minor concern in a car, this deterioration is a more substantial problem in infrequently used boats or during winter haul outs.Don’t mix ethanol-enhanced fuel with the old stuff that contains MTBE. The combination of the two additives, especially when water is mixed in, may create a gel-like material that clogs carburetors (especially in outboards). Use all the old gas before refueling with E-10 if possible, or refill with the tank no more than 20% full. A clean, dry tank is best for the first fill up.Replace fuel filters frequently during the first few tanks of ethanol fuel. If you don’t already have one, install a fuel/water separator filter, carry replacement elements and a bucket for holding used elements. Be prepared to change filters on the water if your engine loses rpm, sputters or hesitates. We also strongly recommend installing a spin-on fuel vacuum gauge so that you can see when the filter needs to be changed.If your boat or engine was built before 1990, you may need to replace old hoses, O-rings, primer bulbs or other plastic or rubber parts that are not alcohol-compatible. Inspect the system more frequently for leakage or deterioration. Most fuel hoses made after 1984 and labeled with SAE J1527 are ethanol safe.Do your best to keep water out of your fuel. Fill up with only as much gas as you will use during the next two weeks (conversely, keeping your tank full prevents water from condensing on its walls, especially if you live in an area with big daily temperature swings). When fueling, we advise using a fuel filter funnel to prevent water and particulates from entering your system. Add a gasoline fuel treatment like Starbrite’s Star Tron.When winterizing, top off fuel tanks to about 95% full, leaving room for expansion, and add a good fuel stabilizer such as Sta-Bil. A nearly full tank limits the flow of air into and out of the vent, reducing the chance of condensation adding water to the fuel. Draining fuel tanks of E-10 gas, while completely eliminating any chances of phase separation, is potentially dangerous and an impractical solution.Once phase separation occurs, additives and water separators can’t help. The only remedy is to have the gas and ethanol/water mixture professionally removed from the tank. With any fuel that sits in a tank for a long time, it’s important to add a stabilizer (but understand that stabilizers do not prevent phase separation). Phase separation problems typically happen when boats are stored over the winter with tanks only a quarter to half full. In the summer, infrequently used boats with partially filled tanks are also prone to phase separation.Never try to plug up a fuel tank vent to prevent moist air from entering a tank. Without room to expand, the additional pressure could rupture fuel system components.

Tech Tips - Starter and battery care STARTERS AND BATTERIESMost starter failures are due to water damage from being submerged. You should always replace your starter if it was submerged because even if it works now it will fail in the near future. Starters are not sealed so when submerged water is trapped inside the starter motor which will eventually rust the brushes and electrical components. When and where is the only question….Another leading cause to starter failure is slow cranking. When your starter cranks over slowly you actually use more amperage causing more wear on the starter. This leads to damage to the brushes and armature.Tips for a healthy starting system1. Battery should exceed manufacturers requirements.2. Fluid level should be checked and maintained. (Maintenance free batteries eliminate the need to monitor fluid level.)3. Connections at the battery and starter need to be clean and tight.4. Battery cable from battery to engine should be inspected for bad spots, getting hot while cranking, and hard sections. (Make sure you have the ground side checked. It is just as important as the positive.)The faster your engine spins at cranking, the easier it starts. This is a area that is severely neglected and causes a lot of on the water problems that could be avoided. The little extra money here goes a long way in your boating experience.STARTING YOUR BOATAll fuel injection systems should be turn key starting, if you are having problems with start up and you have a fuel injection engine have your engine check right away. Small problems can turn into large ones if not addressed. Note – most fuel injection systems have a clear flood mode. This will cut of new fuel from coming in through the injectors. Most manufactures have a throttle position you can crank the engine at to clear a flooded engine. Usually it is full throttle or 3/4 throttle position. Crank engine until it starts, when the engine starts be ready to pull throttle back to idle so it doesn’t over rev the engine.PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENTCorrosion blocks, sold in spray cans can go a long way to keep your engine looking new for years. Design to leave a film on engine surface to combat corrosion before it starts. We use Boeshield T-9 on all the engines we service and repair. Working on a lot of the same engines every year we see the results and the benefits of a good corrosion block. There are many corrosion blocks on the market find one you like and use it at least two times a year for freshwater and four times a year for saltwater. Spray your engine and all electrical connections.

Tech Tips - Manifold Maintenance The Importance of Exhaust Manifold MaintenanceExhaust manifolds are on all inboard and inboard/outboard (stern-drive) engines and is a vital link to your engines cooling system. They are what you would call an external water jacket which cools the engine and lets the fresh water exit out of the engine. Stock exhaust manifold risers are made of cast iron and over a period of time they will rust internally.This, in essence, will make the jacket, between the interior exhaust and the exterior water, deteriorate. Eventually this will allow water to intrude into the engine exhaust and cause extreme damage.You “may” get warning signs before your manifold fails. If your engine is difficult to start, produces white smoke or runs roughly, you could have water leaking into the cylinders.You should have the manifolds and risers inspected every few years and if necessary, have them removed and cleaned. If they are not cleaned and maintained the rust from the deterioration will accumulate and soon will restrict and/or completely block the flow of water which will cause the engine to overheat, as well as. Shorten the life of the engine. Again, ignoring these situations could cause terminal damage to your engine. Manifolds and risers should always be viewed as a service item and be checked or replaced at regular intervals. They should also always be replaced in pairs. If you do this, major problems, and headaches can be avoided.

Tech Tips - Protect motor from E-10 PROTECTING YOUR OUTBOARD FROM E-10E-10 or Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) is an additive found in gasoline. Your fuel from the pump is essentially 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline. This additive has great benefits: reduces our dependency on foreign oil and creates job opportunities for the rural areas of our county. It also comes with great risks to your outboard engine.With the addition of ethanol in your gasoline, you will see a higher risk of water in your fuel system. Ethanol attracts and absorbs water and will also loosen debris in your fuel system. Newer motors are designed for E10 compatibility. Outboards manufactured before 2006 are at a higher risk for E10 damage.Symptoms of E10 problems:Stalling – especially when attempting to accelerateClogged filtersClogged fuel injectorsPresence of “gunk” or sludgeRustingPremature wear on engine parts (rubber, aluminum, or fiberglass)WHAT CAN YOU DO? Check at the pump Using a fuel with higher than 10% ethanol will void your manufacturer’s warranty Follow manufacturer’s fuel recommendations (most outboard are made to run 87 octane – higher octanes can lead to engine problems) Replace gas every 2 to 4 weeks gas older than 90 days is most likely going to contain amounts of water that will damage your outboard Check your fuel system for water Avoid running low on fuel this will allow the water that has settled to the bottom of your fuel tank to enter your outboards fuel system and water does not burn. Check your fuel filter every 50 – 100 hours Check with your manufacturer to see if they offer a water separating filter Check with your manufacturer to see if they offer or recommend a fuel stabilizer
